Welcome and first assignment

Welcome to the course blog for Amst 203, The Thirties. Here are your readings for this Thursday:

Charles Kettering, “Keep the Consumer Dissatisfied” (1929)

John J. Raskob, “Everybody Ought to be Rich” (1929)

T.H. Watkins, “The Hungry Years” (1999) excerpt

Questions to consider:

1) Kettering and Raskob both articulate and shape some of the dominant attitudes in the 1920s United States about business, money, and consumerism. What were those attitudes?

2) According to Watkins, how and why did  the stock market crash in 1929?

Let me know if you have any problems downloading or viewing the material.

See you Thursday!
